Removing A Doorknob From Your Door

Posted on

When you have a broken doorknob, you may need to replace it with a new type of doorknob. There are many door installation services that will perform this job for you, but you also have the option of installing the doorknob yourself. The first step in installing a doorknob is to remove the old one.

Understanding the Doorknob Parts

First, make sure that you know all of the parts of the doorknob. The outside housing is the exterior portion of the doorknob. The inside housing is the interior portion of the doorknob. The latch is a spring-operated bolt. The strike plate is a metal plate that is fixed to the door. Short screws are used to secure the bolt and faceplate to the door. Long screws are used to secure the outside housing to the inside housing. If you have curved levers, you may also need a pin tool.

Removing the Strike Plate

The first step is to remove the old doorknob. With some doors, you'll also need to remove the strike plate. This is a rectangular piece of metal that is attached to the side of the door. Remove the top and bottom screws with a Phillips head screwdriver and carefully lift the strike plate off the door. You will also need to remove the old strike plate if you are adding a new latch.

Removing the Screws

In some cases, there are visible screws. However, in other cases, you will need to insert a sharp object into the latch hole. When the hole is round, you'll need to insert a paperclip or nail. If the hole is flat, you should use a flathead screwdriver. You can disengage the knob by pressing on the hole.

Pulling the Knob Away

Next, pull the interior knob away from the door. Make sure to hold the knob with one hand as you pull it away from the door. Sometimes, you will need to wiggle the knob until it detaches from the door. It might be stuck on the doorknob stem. You will also need to pry off or unscrew the faceplate.

Having a Knew Doorknob Professionally Installed

Installing a doorknob can be a hassle. The good news is that you can hire a door installation specialist to install a doorknob for you. Also, if you're thinking about getting a new door, it's a great time to do so when there's something wrong with your doorknob.
